The casual shirt is the most versatile piece in a man's wardrobe. Get the right one and it works with jeans, chinos, shorts — dressed up with a roll of the sleeve or left fully open over a tee. Get it wrong and it sits unworn. Here's a clear-eyed guide to what actually matters when buying men's casual shirts in India.
In India's climate, breathability wins. Look for 100% cotton, linen, or a cotton-linen blend for year-round wear. Avoid polyester blends in casual shirts — they trap heat, don't drape well, and look cheap within a year. A quality cotton shirt will last 3–5 years with normal care. The fabric weight matters too: 180–220 GSM is the sweet spot for a shirt that holds its shape without being stiff.

Fabric quality is the first thing to check. Everything else follows.
Fit is everything. A ₹500 shirt that fits perfectly will always look better than a ₹3000 shirt that doesn't. For casual shirts, a regular or slim fit with a slightly relaxed chest — not boxy, not tight — is the most flattering on most body types. The shoulder seam should hit exactly at your shoulder. Sleeves should end where your wrist meets your hand.
For a core wardrobe, start with solid neutrals: white, light blue, off-white, olive, navy, and grey. These pair with everything and never look dated. A good capsule wardrobe needs 3–4 solid shirts before it needs anything else.
